The Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduate (REEU) program is highly selective for students who wish to prepare for graduate programs and careers in food engineering/processing. About eight REEU Scholars will be selected each year nationally to participate in this program. The expectations for the program are:
- Scholars are highly motivated and willing to explore research opportunities in the cross-discipline of food engineering and chemistry.
- Scholars can be present for the full eight weeks of the program (June 10 to August 2, 2024). Students will be provided two holidays on June 19 and July 4, 2024.
- Scholars are expected to participate in all scheduled activities of the program. Most of the time will be spent with the Research Team, but equally important is the training in professional development. Other requirements/activities include Responsible Conduct of Research Training, Laboratory Safety Training, tours of food processing plants and UT Extension offices.
- Scholars are expected to work eight hours per day for the research/extension work or participation in other scheduled activities.
- Scholars are expected to meet with mentors and the program directors (Drs. Chen and Dia) and report progress weekly. All Scholars are expected to be effective team members and respectful of all participants.
- Scholars are expected to be responsible citizens of the campus community and adhere to policies, rules, and regulations of the University of Tennessee.
- Scholars will present their research at the end of the program with the faculty mentors, prepare and present a poster through the University of Tennessee Summer Research Poster Symposium, and submit a research report to their mentors and program directors during the last week of the program.
- Scholars are required to participate in the REEU program evaluation (including program entry survey, post-program interviews) activities.
