REEU represents Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates.
In Food, Agricultural, Natural Resources and Human Sciences (FANHS), non-formal education and learning activities are presented to people through the Extension services typically associated with land grant universities. More information can be found from the USDA website.
Food Science Extension at UT includes outreach education programs that support county Extension agents, food entrepreneurs, value-added producers, industry and regulatory stakeholders, and Tennessee youth in 4-H and FFA. In this REEU program, the Extension activities include conducting industrial-based research projects to support the food industry, assisting in outreach acclivities to the food entrepreneurs, touring the food processing plants and UT Extension offices.
About eight scholars will be recruited nationally each year.
The scholars will be selected based on their personal statement (research interest, career goals, previous experiences, and your own ideas in food-related areas), completed coursework presented in the transcript(s), letters of recommendation, and the potential contribution of participation to your academic and professional development. Interviews, if needed, are conducted by the Program Director and Research Mentors.
Yes. Each scholar will receive a $5,000 stipend and housing in a University of Tennessee apartment-style dormitory. The scholar will also be reimbursed for up to $500 flight costs or travel mileages.
Students who are entering their sophomore, junior, or senior years are eligible. You also must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, per the USDA funding regulation.
Students graduating in 2023 Spring or Summer are not eligible.

No. Neither the start nor the end date is flexible. This program begins on June 5, 2023, and ends on July 28, 2023, for the 2023 program. The program is designed as an 8-week program; this allows students to have time for other activities at the beginning and end of the summer academic break.

No. This program is a full-time commitment.
The program will pay travel expenses such as airfare or mileage. Once you are accepted to the program, we will contact you to help with travel arrangements.
The scholars will be accommodated in a University of Tennessee apartment-style dormitory.
